Take control of your promotions with discount codes. Discount codes allow you to offer percentage-based or fixed-value discounts for specific items, customer types, booking conditions, or redemption periods.
Discount codes can support a broad range of promotional use cases, including limited-time offers, customer-type discounts, affiliate-related promotions, and direct booking incentives. Customers or Dashboard users can apply eligible discount codes during booking, and discounts are applied to the booking subtotal for qualifying items.
Overview
Discount codes can be configured to support a variety of promotional scenarios, such as:
- 20% off a tour for the first 100 redemptions
- $15 off an escape room booking during a limited redemption period
- 10% off each Adult ticket, but Child tickets are full price
- $10 off each Adult ticket and $5 off each Child ticket using the same discount code
- 0% off each four-hour kayak rental (excluding optional gear add-ons)
- 50% off direct bookings for friends and family
Discounts are applied at the item or customer type level, and reduce the eligible booking subtotal before taxes and fees are calculated. Depending on configuration, discounts may also apply to priced custom fields associated with eligible items.
You can also set different discount amounts for specific customer types using a single discount code. For example, the same code can provide $10 off each Adult ticket and $5 off each Child ticket. Each selected customer type receives its unique discount amount.
Discount codes support both online and direct bookings. In some cases, feature interactions or restrictions may affect how a code behaves.
Discount codes cannot currently be redeemed for bookings purchased with combos or packaged combos unless the discount is configured with a 0 value. Discount codes also cannot be used when a customer rebooks online.
When to use discount codes
Discount codes are best suited for straightforward promotional setups that require controlled redemption behavior within FareHarbor.
Common use cases include:
- Offering a percentage or fixed-value discount
- Restricting discounts to specific customer types or items
- Limiting the number of redemptions available
- Creating date-based promotions
- Supporting direct-booking promotions
- Assigning affiliates to qualifying bookings
For more advanced promotional setups, such as randomized codes or more complex campaign behavior, campaigns may be a better fit.
The bigger picture
Discount codes can work alongside other FareHarbor features and configurations, depending on your business needs.
Campaigns
Discount and campaign codes serve different purposes and can be used independently or together. Discount codes are designed for more direct promotional setups, while campaigns support more advanced configuration options and promotional logic.
To compare recommended use cases for each setup type, see Redemption types: Summary & use cases.
Affiliates
Discount codes can be used alongside affiliate configurations to automatically tag bookings or restrict code redemption when customers book through affiliate links.
Some affiliate-related setups, such as affiliate tagging for combos, may require a 0 value discount configuration. Learn more about affiliate tagging.
Online cart
When used with online cart, discount codes apply at the item level rather than to the entire cart subtotal.
Only one discount code can be used per transaction, but eligible discounts can apply to multiple qualifying items within the same cart.
