Leaving your FareHarbor Site
Last updated: February 18, 2025
If you decide that you no longer wish to have a FareHarbor Site, this document will help clarify the migration process.
Although you own the content and media that describes your brand, the WordPress template of a FareHarbor Site is the intellectual property of FareHarbor. The template and its custom Dashboard integration features cannot be fully transferred to another host as they are on your FareHarbor Site. Our team will assist in gathering your content, but it will be your responsibility to build or contract a replacement site with a new host. See Options for Exporting Content & Media for help making that transition.
If you leave and decide you are not happy with your replacement site, FareHarbor makes it very easy to bring your FareHarbor Site back. We will preserve your site and can reactivate it should you choose to return.
How to inform us you are leaving your Site
If you’ve decided to leave your FareHarbor Site, please submit a Support ticket at https://help.fareharbor.com/submit/ with the category FareHarbor Hosted Website. In the type of request, please choose Other and add to the comment box that you are moving your website to a new host.
If you need assistance understanding how to move your domain to the new website you’ve built, our team can provide guidance (see the ‘How do I take my new site live?‘ section below). If you know how to complete this step, we suggest you point your domain to your new website and submit a ticket letting us know you’ve left your FareHarbor Site afterwards. We will take care of preserving your FareHarbor Site as soon as you’ve contacted us.
Options for exporting content & media
Google Drive folder
If you are not working with a web developer or are leaving for a host other than Wordpress, our team will organize your content so you can easily upload it to another platform.
We will include all of the text available on your site in a spreadsheet, organized by page. This option will not include styling (HTML or CSS) that may not be accepted by all website builders.
We will also include folders of your media separated by the month and year they were uploaded.
.xml file
If you have a web developer or have experience with WordPress development, creating custom post types and wiring up advanced custom fields from the database to the front end, we can send an .xml file of your content and media.
This is only useful if you are moving your content to a new WordPress site. Not everything will export, as many features rely on our platform’s JavaScript and CSS.
HTML ZIP file
If you are working with a new web developer who is capable of adding html, javascript and css files to a web server, they can follow these steps to get a full export of the site. Please note if done correctly your site will be visible and fully usable on the web BUT updating content will involve a deep knowledge of web servers and html. There is no admin backend for this option to update and maintain content.
Requirements
Instructions
- Open a tab in the terminal application of your choice
brew install httrack
httrack https://yoursite.com /Location/Where/To/Save/
Third-party tools
Content can manually be retrieved by using third-party tools to scrape your website and put it in a raw code format. This option is something that would need to be completed yourself.
How do I take my new site live?
Complete the following steps to take your new site live, as relevant to your setup.
Step 1: Establish the new hosting setup
- If you have a pre-existing hosting setup, proceed to Step 2.
If you don’t have a pre-existing setup, or the old site is no longer available:
- Build a new site on the host of your choice.
- Coordinate with us to keep your FareHarbor Site active until the new site is ready.
Step 2: Rename the DNS records
- If your DNS is actively managed by a website host, change nameservers to your new website host. (Note: Access to your domain registrar is required to complete this step.)
If your DNS is self-managed, rename the relevant DNS records.
Your business maintains ownership of its domain when using a FareHarbor Site. Ownership is not transferred.
Not sure how to rename DNS records? Please reach out to FareHarbor for additional guidance.
Once the DNS records have updated, visitors will be directed to your new site.
