Changing or resetting passwords
Last updated: April 22, 2021
Any user can change their own password. Users with permission to create and edit other users can both change the password settings for someone else and require a user to change their password upon their next login. Read more about each scenario in the sections below.
Reminder: Passwords must be at least eight (8) characters long and include a number, uppercase letter, and lowercase letter.
Changing your own password
Go to the Settings section of your Dashboard and select Users & Permissions.
- Choose your user account.
- Select the Account tab, then the Password tab.
Check the Change password box.
- Enter the new password manually or generate one randomly by clicking Generate password.
- Click Save.
Requiring a user to reset their password upon their next login
Remember, only users with permission to create and edit other users can require a user to change their password upon their next login.
- Navigate to the user you’d like to require a password change for in the Users section of the Dashboard.
- Select the Account tab, then the Password tab.
Check the Required password change the next time they log in box.
- Select Save changes.
Depending on what device the user logs in with, they will see one of the following prompts to set a new password:
Desktop
iOS
Android
Note: For mobile devices, please ensure you are using the latest version of the FareHarbor app.
Once they have completed their password reset, you will be able to see the last time they changed their password in the Password tab of their Account settings:
Logging other users out of FareHarbor
Remember, only users with permission to create and edit other users can log a user out of FareHarbor.
You may want to force a user to log out of FareHarbor on any devices where they are currently logged in. This can be useful as part of an employee’s offboarding process or if you’ve identified a security breach with that user’s FareHarbor account. To log a user out of FareHarbor:
- Navigate to the user you’d like to log out in the Users section of the Dashboard.
- Select the Account tab, then the Password tab.
- Check the Log this user out box.
- Select Save changes.
Resetting a user’s password for them
Remember, only users with permission to create and edit other users can manage passwords.
There may be some situations where you’d like to prompt a user to reset their password or set a temporary password. This can be useful if you’re onboarding a new crew member or need a user’s password to be changed immediately due to security reasons. (Remember, you can also require a user to reset their own password the next time they login if there is no urgent need to reset the password immediately.)
Resetting a user’s password for them
- Go to the Settings section of your Dashboard and select Users & Permissions.
- Choose the user account that you’d like to manage password information for.
- Select the Password tab.
Select a method to reset the user’s password:
Send user info email (recommended): This will send an email like the one below to the user with their user information, including their username and a link to reset their own password. Sending this email immediately invalidates their current password.
Note: If a user has not set an email on their account, you will not be able to select this option.
- Set temporary password: Allows you to manually set the user’s password or generate a random password for them. You will then have to communicate the new password to your user outside of FareHarbor. Choosing this option immediately invalidates their current password.
- Select Save.
You can see the password status of a user in the Password tab of their account, where you’ll be able to see whether a user has a temporary password, an expired password, a required password reset, or has a standing password.
Note: If you reset a user’s password, setting a new password on login will be required until they log in again.
